5 Alternative Holiday Spots in the Sun

When we think about sunny holiday destinations, we usually picture the regular tourist haunts: Spain, Portugal or the Canary Islands to name just a few. However, there are thousands of beaches out there to be discovered that haven’t been spoiled by mainstream tourism, making them perfect for a quiet break in the sun. Here are some of our favourite alternative destinations, to give you some inspiration.

Croatia

Croatia’s beaches are some of the most underrated in Europe; with beautifully clean natural coastlines offering stunning views over the Adriatic Sea. Of particular beauty though is the northern coastline and in fact the entire region of Istria, which lies alongside the Croatia/Slovenia border and looks out towards Northern Italy. With luxury hotels including the Kempinski Hotel Adriatic you’ll find a little part of paradise hidden here, relatively unknown by the tourist world.

Tunisia

Tunisia is similar in climate and landscape to its neighbour Egypt, although a little more off the beaten track. While not as developed in terms of tourist resorts, it’s a wonderfully authentic way to discover a different culture and soak up some sun at the same time. It’s ideal for walkers and adventurers, thanks to the varied landscape around the major cities – make your way through the Selda Gorjje’s pink mountains and canyons, or head to the city of Tozeur for traditional Tunisian food and nightlife.

Mexico

Mexico does hold some tourist sway, especially with those living in the United States, but for Europeans it’s an often-forgotten treasure. The party city of Cancun is the most obvious choice, boasting a 24/7 party atmosphere with cocktail bars, beach parties and nightclubs, as well as beautifully-maintained beaches. For somewhere a little quieter, head to Mazatlan, a smaller town which is still popular around spring break in America but otherwise offers a more peaceful glimpse of Mexican life.

Tanzania

Tanzania is a true beach-lover’s paradise, promising some of the most beautiful scenery in southern Kenya. Visit Zanzibar, a coastal region with over 30 beaches, all boasting white sands and sparkling waters, along with a fascinating eco system. Make sure you go diving in the area, and visit the fishing villages along the seafront for some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste. Tanzania is a truly idyllic destination, promising beautiful and unspoiled landscapes featuring majestic peaks and mountains, and an abundance of wildlife.

Goa, India

Goa saw a little popularity around the 1960s when the hippie movement took it as the destination of choice, and these days the Indian paradise still tends to attract the more conscious traveller seeking new experiences. For the best beach in the area settle down around Arambol, the northernmost beach in the region and one of the least populated – ensuring you can enjoy the view over the Arabian Sea in peace.
