As passionate fans of perfect beach destinations, we are always delighted to highlight places that offer the unapologetic beach bum more than just a sun lounger to recline in before a cerulean sea. These centers of escape from the cares of your everyday life should also offer plenty of opportunities to enliven your spirit and learn things about yourself as well, which are aspects that not every destination can satisfy.
Puerto Vallarta, a charming coastal city sitting on lukewarm waters of the Bahia de Banderas, does tick all of the above mentioned boxes, with a variety of beaches, restaurants, clubs, and interesting side trips that will make your holiday an unforgettable one.
To give you a better idea of what this picturesque tropical metropolis at the base of the lush Sierra Madre Mountains has available for a sun-starved holidaymaker such as yourself, the following three activities and attractions are just a taste of what Puerto Vallarta and vicinity has in store for you this winter!
1) Discovering the playa that is right for you
With over 100 kilometers of coastline to explore within the Bahia de Banderas, Puerto Vallarta and area has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to stunning beaches. One of the best urban beaches within the city is Playa Los Muertos, which is a place where sandy bottoms, beachside bars and restaurants, and cultural performers all come together to provide multiple days at the water’s edge that you’ll remember for a long time to come.
Those that seek a quieter spot will adore Playa Gemelas, a short but secluded beach ten minutes south of town which has some of the clearest, most pristine water in the region. Finally, be sure to check out the cliff-backed Playa Mismaloya, which is a gorgeous spot where the Liz Taylor movie Night Of The Iguana was filmed … not long after arriving, you’ll implicitly understand why they chose this spot, as its rural, rugged, but paradisaical nature made for an ideal film location.
2) Indulging in Puerto Vallarta’s abundant nightlife
After a long day soaking in the sun and enjoying the surf on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, tap into the energy that runs through this town by checking out its vibrant nightlife scene. The young or young at heart need to check out Senor Frog’s, as its foam parties are legendary and their love of life unmatchable.
The Malecon has a variety of bars, clubs, and restaurants, one of which is bound to mesh with your interests, while those that prefer the same sex will find a number of clubs that cater to their interests.
3) Embracing your inner surfer in Sayulita
Don’t leave this region without at least trying to pick up a new hobby or skill. While surfing is a popular sport throughout the Bahia de Banderas, the waves are bigger and more consistent in Sayulita, a small town located an hour north of Puerto Vallarta.
This makes it easy to visit here on a day trip, and with plenty of surf camps that can be found on the beachfront here, you’ll be able to find a quality instructor that will get you on a board and out riding the swells in no time flat!
